Police at the scene of the shooting last year.

The man arrested for an attempted gunpoint robbery of popular Whakatane business Julian's Berry Farm and Cafe has been jailed for five years.

Redmond Eruera Huirua, 27, was sentenced in the High Court in Hamilton on Tuesday.

The charges included commission of a crime with a firearm, discharge of a firearm with reckless disregard and theft.

Two people were wounded after shots were fired in an attempted armed robbery at Julians Berry Farm in the Eastern Bay of Plenty back in February last year.

At about 1.20pm on February 7, 2017, an armed man entered the cafe and was making demands of the cafe staff, a customer intervened and attempted to talk him out of what he was doing.

Huirua fired his gun into the concrete floor of the cafe and pellets from the gun ricocheted into four people standing nearby.

The staff and all the customers fled the scene, forcing Huirua to leave empty-handed.
