The Bay of Plenty District Health Board is failing to achieve many of the targets set out in a new national ranking system for DHBs across the country.
The rankings for New Zealand's 21 DHBs are based on the government's six health targets for emergency departments, elective surgery, radiotherapy cancer treatment, child immunisation, smoking prevention and cardiovascular services.
BOP DHB was ranked second to last in the target to have 85 per cent of two year olds immunised by July 2011.
In the elective surgery targets, the BOP DHB was one of nine that did not achieve the government's 100 per cent target.
At the BOP DHB's two emergency departments in Tauranga and Whakatane, 87 per cent of patients were admitted to a ward, discharged and transferred within six hours. The government's target is 95 per cent.
Like almost every other DHB, except three, BOP DHB did achieve its 100 per cent target to have shorter waits for patients seeking radiotherapy cancer treatment.
BOP DHB CEO Phil Cammish says it is good for the community to see that everyone needing radiation treatment for cancer in the Bay of Plenty is accessing this within six weeks of their first specialist assessment.
'Similarly with improved access to elective surgery. The ministry's figures show we have achieved 93 per cent of the target for the quarter, despite record levels of acute and emergency presentations, and we are on track to reach 100 per cent by June next year. These numbers show our hospitals are working hard for our people,” says Phil.
Nineteen per cent of hospitalised smokers at the BOP DHB were provided with help and advice to quit by July 2010.
The government's target was 80 per cent and the Wairarapa District Health Board was the only DHB to achieve it.
