BOP Dev coasts to victory

A combination of youth and experience took the Bay of Plenty Development team to a comfortable victory over their Counties Manukau counterparts at Manurewa on Sunday.

Batting first, Counties was in some trouble at 107/5 with the Bay of Plenty bowlers in charge.

A rearguard action for the eighth wicket produced nearly 40 runs with the home side reaching 194/9 after the allotted 50 overs.

The Bay wickets were shared around, with skipper Dale Swan and former Bay first XI bowler Andrew Gibbs taking two wickets apiece.

Two of the new recruits also made their mark with the ball, with Campbell Thomas and Tauranga Boys' College's Elliot Timoti, grabbing two wickets each.

The chase for victory by the Bay of Plenty batsmen turned out to be a stroll in the park with the visitors reaching their target of 195 with seven wickets to spare.

Elliot Timoti showed real maturity to post 55 runs, and share in an 89 run partnership with Mitch McCann (35), that set up the stroll to victory.

Another to make his mark in the Bay turn at bat was long time Bay of Plenty representative Matthew Drake who was there at the end with an unbeaten 55 runs.

The Basil McBurney Trophy competition now takes a break, until the Auckland Anniversary weekend in late January 2012, when Bay of Plenty will play a double header against Waikato Valley and Northland in Hamilton.
