In today's forecast we are expecting a fine start with cloud increasing and a chance of showers from the afternoon. Also light winds.

It's a two-clothing layer day today with a high of 18 and an overnight low of 11 degrees. Humidity is 77 per cent.

Low tide is at 9.40am and high tide is at 4.10pm (Tay Street times). There's a sea swell of 1.4m with a sea temperature of 15 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 6.06pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is between 8.30pm and 10.30pm.

On this day in NZ history in 1834 the rescue of the Harriet survivors began. The family of the whaler Jacky Guard were among a group of Pākehā captured by Māori in May 1834 after the barque Harriet ran aground on the Taranaki coast.

In world history on this day in 1915 Stonehenge was sold by auction for 6,600 pounds sterling to a Mr. Chubb, who bought it as a present for his wife. He presented it to the British nation three years later.

In 1937 the women's airspeed record was set at 292 miles per hour by American pilot Jacqueline Cochran. In 1937 J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy novel The Hobbit was published.

In 1978 two Soviet cosmonauts set a space endurance record after 96 days in space. In 1999 an earthquake in Taiwan killed more than 2,400, injured over 11,305, and caused $300 billion New Taiwan dollars in damage. In 2003 the Galileo space mission ended as the probe was sent into Jupiter's atmosphere where it was crushed.

Today is the birthday of H.G. Wells, science fiction writer whose works include The Time Machine, The Invisible Man and The War of the Worlds. Born in 1866, he once said "If you fell down yesterday, stand up today" and "If we don't end war, war will end us."
