Armed police spotted in Mount Maunganui

UPDATED 3.40PM: Several police cordons are in place around Mount Maunganui and Tauranga this afternoon, as police hunt man who has a warrant for his arrest.

SunLive has received several calls and emails from members of the public who have spotted armed police at a number of different locations around the city.

"Police received information that a man with outstanding warrants to arrest was seen driving a vehicle," says a police spokesperson.

"Some cordons were put in place in attempts to stop the man. Inquiries are ongoing to locate the man."

EARLIER:

Reports are coming in of armed police in Mount Manganui.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says there are several police units posted along Hewletts Road.

"There is a police car sitting on the corner of Hewletts Road and Totara Street and an officer has taken a gun out of the boot and placed in his car.

"Also, three or four police cars have gone past in different directions with sirens going."

Another SunLive reader says she saw an armed officer standing on the roundabout near the Bayfari Shopping Centre.
