Initial findings in the investigation surrounding a fatal house fire near Opotiki last week, suggest the cause of the blaze is not suspicious.

One person was killed in the blaze which happened at a single-storey property on Thursday night.

In a statement made to SunLive by Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Standen he says the investigation is ongoing.

'The investigation continues into this fatal fire with a number of the Opotiki residents now having been spoken to as we try to piece together the movements of the deceased.

'We are working with New Zealand Fire to understand the cause of the fire however we do not have anything at this stage that indicates any caused for suspicion.”

A post mortem has been carried out in Rotorua.
