Buying a car from a dealer

Buying a car from a Motor Vehicle Dealer can take time and effort.

It's a major purchase and you want to make sure you get it right. But what can you do if something goes wrong after you buy your car?
You do have rights if you have problems with your vehicle after you have bought it. If the seller won't accept that they must provide you with a remedy, try taking these steps:
• Talk to the manager of the business, if you bought from a trader.
• Write a letter to the seller setting out the problem and the remedy you believe you are entitled to.
• Get a second opinion on the problem from a qualified independent vehicle specialist.
• Think about what the seller is offering and ask yourself – 'Is this a reasonable compromise?”
If you can't resolve the problem with the seller, you may be able to take a claim to the Motor Vehicle Disputes Tribunal. The MVDT can hear claims under a range of laws, including the Consumer Guarantees Act, Fair Trading Act and Sale of Goods Act.
