History of Tauranga schools

Re the article ‘Class of '57' (page 6, The Weekend Sun, October 5).

Tauranga District High School did not exist in 1957. In 1946, pupils from the Tauranga District High School, part of the primary school complex on Cameron Road between Arundel Street and 5th Avenue, moved to the newly-built Tauranga College at the Hillsdene location on Cameron Road, near 13th Avenue. Tauranga District High School then ceased to exist.

Tauranga College was a co-educational college from 1946 to 1957. In 1958 that Hillsdene site became Tauranga Boys' College. There was a transition year for the girls in 1957: in 1958 Tauranga Girls' College was officially opened. The ex-pupils of Tauranga College still hold an annual reunion for those who attended the co-ed college from 1946 to 1957.
