Car boot sale to help children in need

Stall holders at a car boot sale being held in Whakatane this weekend will be doing their part to help children in need.

The car boot sale is being held at Whakatane Countdown on Saturday October 13 as part of the nationwide Countdown Kids Appeal.

The appeal is now in its 12th year and aims to raise much needed money for children's wards at hospitals throughout the country.

As part of the appeal each store comes up with fun and interactive ways to raise funds.

Leading this weekend's car boot-sale fundraiser is Fiona Timmins. She says the store has lead a number of successful fundraisers so far.

'We host some type of fundraiser each week,” she says. 'This has included things such as mufti-days and a staff hamburger day along with sausage sizzles outside the store every weekend.”

Nationwide, the fundraising target for this year is $1.2m and a percentage of these funds will go towards fulfilling the wish-lists of Tauranga and Whakatane Hospitals.

The Whakatane store has been helping to raise the money needed to fulfil these wishlists for more than three months, and Fiona says the cut-off date for fundraising is coming up on October 26.

'Our goal for our store is $23,000 and we're sitting on $21,000 so we're doing a pretty good job.”

Earlier this year Whakatane Hospital, the store's local hospital, indicated it is looking to create an outside play area for their young patients.

Proceeds raised at this weekend's car boot sale fundraiser will aim to help make this a reality.

'People who want to join in only need to fill their car boot with what they want to sell, come along to the store, park their car in the designated area and pay $10 for the stand at any one of our checkouts.”

The car boot sale is being held at Whakatane Countdown on Saturday from 8am-11am, stall fees cost $10. The money made from this fee will be donated to the appeal.
