Win and loss on day one

The two Bay of Plenty teams at the Northern Districts Primary cricket tournament posted a win and a loss on the competition's first day.

Played in Hamilton each year, the three day ND Primary tournament completes the annual competition that began with two rounds earlier in the season.

BOP Coastland continued its season's unbeaten record when they accounted for Northland in a high scoring encounter.

Batting first, the Bay side posted an impressive 185/4.

Josh Earle top scored with 66, with Ruben Clinton (41) and Andrew Norman (24) who retired injured, making valuable contributions.

While the team from the far north started with real enthusiasm, the Coastland bowlers grabbed the ascendancy to remove their opponents for 176 to take a nine run victory. Jack Dey returned 3/36 with Tom Yaxley taking 2/22.

The BOP Lakeland team made a valiant last gasp attempt for victory against Counties Manukau in their match.

Counties batted first and was dismissed by the Bay team bowlers for 167.

Alistair Blackett (3/21) and Charlie Rouse (3/25) bowled with real enthusiasm to take three wickets apiece with Sean Purdy grabbing two wickets.

The Counties bowlers ripped through the Bay side's top and middle order to have the Bay side in desperate trouble at 41 for the loss of nine wickets.

However a 10th wicket partnership between Charlie Rouse (34) and Brad McKnight (28) took the Bay side to respectability with an outstanding 69 run partnership.

In spite of the heroics of the last Bay pair at the crease, the Lakeland side was eventually dismissed for 110.

Day two of the tournament brings a local Bay of Plenty derby with BOP Lakeland squaring off against their BOP Coastland counterparts.
