Tauranga residents battling with methamphetamine addiction will be able to seek support at an information session today.
Tauranga Anti-P Ministry is hosting a walk-in session at the Greerton greenspace, outside Greerton Library, until 12.30pm.
Anti-P Ministry volunteer Kayla Norton is one of four people leading the session, which she hopes will promote awareness surrounding methamphetamine.
She says it's an issue which is extremely close to home.
'I'm a recovering addict myself,” says Kayla. As of yesterday, she is 15 months clean of drugs and alcohol.
She says she now wants to help others to achieve the same thing.
'We want to spread awareness of this addiction,” she says. 'Nationally, people are finally starting to recognise this as a mental health issue, not a criminal issue.
'Basically we set up our chairs and tables with pamphlets, posters, stickers and resources and give our time to help people in the community.”
She says the organisation is reaching out nationwide, with more than 4000 members throughout the country
Similar events have also been covered in towns including Kawerau and Whangarei.
'We held the first one in Tauranga about two weeks ago during the school holida," she adds.
'We're doing it each week, hitting different spots in Tauranga.”
She says the event is not only for addicts themselves, but for their friends and families too, along with anyone who knows people battling methamphetamine-related issues.
'They can send them our way and we can direct them to the right direction and give them support and advice," she says.
'We've got a lot of resources on our hands, so we basically just give our time each week to share this with others.”
The walk-in session is expected to hit Mount Maunganui, Welcome Bay and Te Puke over the next month.
She says the initiative has also been well-supported by Tauranga City Council.
'They've been really supportive of our mission,” says Kayla.
