Children and parents at Otumoetai Playcentre are committed to minimising their waste, and with great results.
The centre has been a part of the Tauranga City Council ‘Resource Wise Schools' programme since 2016 and in a recent waste audit, the centre achieved 92 percent rate of diversion from landfill.
A typical kindy achieves 60 to 70 percent diversion.
Otumoetai Playcentre mum Jodie Moore says it's an amazing achievement and testament to the hard work and commitment of our member families.
The centre has its own worm farm, compost bin, recycling bins and Terracycle toothcare collection point.
Children and their parents have also made beeswax wraps on session and have recently committed to being a glitter-free centre.
This term, Resource Wise Schools Advisor Sue Matthews, has attended sessions to run the Great Waste Race, an interactive game where children learn how to identify and dispose of different types of waste.
