Pompeii, Michelangelo and the weather

In today's weather forecast we are expecting rain developing in the morning, with hail and possible thunderstorms this afternoon. It should become fine again this evening. There are strong southwesterlies forecast.

It's a two-clothing layer day today with a high of 18 and an overnight low of 7 degrees. Humidity is 72 per cent.

High tide is at 1.30pm and low tide at 7.50pm. There's a sea swell of 0.3m and sea temperature is 17 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 7.45pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is between 7 and 9pm.

This day in NZ history in 1898 the Old-age Pensions Act became law. A world first, the Act gave a small means-tested pension to elderly people with few assets who were ‘of good moral character'. It was one of the major achievements of Richard Seddon's Liberal government.

In 1944 Polish refugees arrived in New Zealand. Over 800 Polish refugees arrived in Wellington, seeking safety from war-torn Europe. For the 732 children and 102 adults it was the end of a long and perilous journey.

In world history on this day in 79 the city of Pompeii was buried by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. In 1512 Michelangelo's painting on the Sistine Chapel ceiling was exhibited for the first time.

In 1967 the first issue of Rolling Stone hit the streets. In 1968 President Lyndon B. Johnson called a halt to bombing in Vietnam, hoping this would lead to progress at the Paris peace talks. In 1968 the Motion Picture Association of America officially introduced its rating system to indicate age-appropriateness of film content.

Today is the birthday of French poet and historian.1636 Nicholas Boileaux. Born in 1636, he once said "Whatever we conceive well we express clearly, and words flow with ease."
