Gas leak in Te Puke

Update 3.05pm - Firefighters are at the scene of a gas leak near a residential area of Te Puke.

Fire Northern Communications shift manager Colin Underdown says the gas leak is on Cameron Road.

"We've received a report of a gas leak. Fire crews are in attendance and the gas authority has been notified.

"Crews are awaiting their arrival and checking over the area."

Meanwhile further east, firefighters have also attended a fire in Whakatane at about 9am.

"We were called to King Street where a transformer was reportedly on fire," says Colin.

"A power box had shorted and was arcing and smoking.

"This has been left in the hands of the local power authority."

It is understood that a widespread power outage was also experienced by many households in the District. This has now been resolved.
