In today's weather forecast we are expecting a few showers, clearing in the evening. Also a southwesterly developing.

It's a two-clothing layer day today with a high of 14 and an overnight low of 7 degrees. Humidity is 81 per cent.

Low tide is at 10.20am and high tide at 4.30pm (Tay St). There's a sea swell of 0.5m and sea temperature is 18 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 8.04pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is between 9 and 11pm.

On this day in NZ history in 2010 the Pike River mine explosion killed 29 men. The mine exploded at 3.45pm on Friday November 19 2010. Twenty-nine of the 31 men underground died immediately or shortly afterwards from the blast or because of the toxic atmosphere this generated.

In world history on this day in 1620 the Pilgrims sighted Cape Cod. In 1863 Abraham Lincoln delivered the 'Gettysburg Address” at the dedication of the National Cemetery at the site of the Battle of Gettysburg.

In 1897 the Great 'City Fire” in London broke out. In 1911 New York received the first Marconi wireless transmission from Italy.

In 1926 Leon Trotsky was expelled from the Politburo in the Soviet Union. In 1949 Prince Ranier III was crowned the 30th Prince of Monaco. In 1952 Scandinavian Airlines opened a commercial route from Canada to Europe. In 1969 Apollo 12 touched down on the moon. In 1973 the New York stock market took its sharpest drop in 19 years.

Today is the birthday of Jack Dorsey, who was the co-founder of Twitter. Born in 1976, he once said "'A founder is not a job, it's a role, an attitude."
