Aces topple Knights at Bay Oval

The two Northern Knights Ford Trophy (one-day) assignments at Bay Oval at Mount Maunganui showed that the wicket will reward patience at the batting crease.

At the weekend the ND one-day team faced the Canterbury Wizards in a match ruined by wet weather – while on Wednesday they played the Auckland Aces in a run fest.

On Wednesday, the Knights made a disastrous start after electing to bat, losing two wickets in the first five balls of the game.

However, the introduction of Hamish Marshall, batting at three, saw the former Black Cap settle down to steady the ship, then take on the Aces bowling later in his innings.

An 83 run partnership with Daryl Mitchell, who finished with 48 against his name, put the Knights right back in the game.

The dismissal of Hamish Marshall for 83 saw Anton Devcich step up to take charge.

He was still there with an unbeaten 55 when the Knights were dismissed for 241 in the 49th over.

In spite of chasing nearly five runs an over, the Auckland side's batsmen were determined not to give up their wickets cheaply and got home for victory for the loss of just four wickets. Opening batsmen Brad Cachopa led the way falling four balls short of a century with Anton Devcich taking two wickets for the home side.

The first game of the Ford Trophy encounters at the BOP Oval saw the Canterbury Wizards also post a competitive target, reaching 267/9.

A feature of the first innings was the three wickets that Bay of Plenty bowler Jason Donnelly grabbed.

Persistent drizzle in the mid-afternoon ensured that the Northern Knights didn't get to visit the batting crease with the game being washed out.
