Sailability Tauranga is looking to make the most of the Bay of Plenty waters over the coming summer months.

The group has already hit the water this season on Thursday December 13, as part of a pre-Christmas event.

Usually the sailors use specially built sailing dinghies, but on Thursday they got a special treat and got to cruise around on keelers.

The trust formed in 2017, when it started doing regular sailing days inviting disabled people to go out on the water and join in on the sailing.

Chairperson of the Sailability Tauranga Charitable Trust, Peter Dallimore says by the end of 2017 they had 50 registered sailors and almost the same amount volunteers.

'By mid-2018 we had 70 registered sailors, and we started to provide a service to the schools as well.”

Peter also says there is a small number who would like to learn to race.

'It is a goal to have some of them be a Paralympian one day.”

The trust have also recently been given some new funding, meaning they have had the opportunity to buy another inflatable patrol boat.
