Twenty20 competition wide open

The inaugural Lonestar Tauranga and Rotorua Twenty 20 title is wide open after two further rounds were completed in the weekend.

In early afternoon play on Saturday, December 10 joint competition leaders Element IMF Cadets grabbed the outright lead beating Bay Of Penty Indians, with Eves Realty Greerton and Te Puke suffering defeat.

While Cadets cruised to victory, Greerton squandered a winning opportunity in the match-up with Tauranga Boys' College.

Tauranga Boys' were bowled out for 104, with Tom MacRury top scoring with a gritty 25 runs, while Greerton bowler Sean Crotty was in fine form with the ball taking five wickets. Greerton were cruising until James Gruijters (37) and Richie Earl (28) who were in charge at the crease, gave their wickets away.

Led by three wickets from James Boyd - Greerton were removed for 95, to hand the Tauranga students what had earlier looked like an unlikely victory.

Te Puke was beaten by Rotorua Central who defended 117, while Platinum Pacific Reclad Mount Maunganui defeated East Bay United in a high scoring encounter.

Greerton stopped Cadets unbeaten run, to leave six of the eight teams in contention for championship honours, when they upset the Baywide heavyweight in the late afternoon round.

Batting first Greerton posted 114/6, with Cadets stalwart Campbell Wilson returning 4/23. However the Greerton bowlers never let the fellow Western Bay side of the hook, and removed them for just 61.

Central and Tauranga Boys' moved into a share of the lead, when they despatched East Bay United and BOP Indians respectively.

Last season's Baywide champions Mount Maunganui lurk just off the pace, when they grabbed their second victory of the day despatching Te Puke.
