Kodi, who is also surf life saving's reigning New Zealand open beach sprint champion, won the 100m in 10.67sec and the 200m in 21.39sec, breaking Mark Keddell's 19-year-old record. He also posted a B-standard qualifier for the world junior championships next year.

It follows the 17-year-old's sprint win at the Fastest Man on the Sand surf life saving competition in Queensland, where he was competing as part of the New Zealand A team.

Tauranga Boys' College runner Julian Oakley narrowly missed his own middle-distance double, winning the senior boys 1500m title just 75mins after finishing second in the 800m behind Whanganui's Brad Mathas.

Scots College's Kieron McDonald set the early pace in the 1500m, but faded to finish third as Oakley burst clear of Ben Moynihan of King's College down the home straight.

'It didn't quite happen in the 800 today, but I really wanted the 1500 after coming second in the 800,” Oakley told the Dominion Post.

'So I was stoked that I did both because it paid off in the end.

'My legs were a bit heavy starting off and Kieron and Ben probably wanted to push the pace, just knowing that I was quite tired.

'But coming into that home straight I knew that I had to give everything that I had and I was lucky enough to hold them off.”

Oakley's finishing time was 3min 54.44sec.
