Fossils, Titan and the weather

In today's weather forecast we are expecting brief rain around midday, then a few showers, with a chance of them being heavy and thundery. Northwesterlies should be dying out by early afternoon.

It's a one-clothing layer day today with a high of 21 and an overnight low of 14 degrees. Humidity is 72 per cent.

High tide is at 1.30pm and low tide at 7.50pm (Tay St). There's a sea swell of 0.9m and sea temperature is 21 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 8.35pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is tomorrow evening between 7 and 9pm.

On this day in NZ history in 1891 Bob Fitzsimmons won a world middleweight boxing title. Fitzsimmons knocked out Jack Dempsey in New Orleans to become the second New Zealander to hold a world boxing title.

In 1948, Malcolm Simpson, a 14-year-old Nelson schoolboy discovered the oldest fossils ever found in New Zealand.

On this day in world history in 1797 Napoleon Bonaparte defeated the Austrians at Rivoli in northern Italy.

In 2005 Huygens, a probe, landed on Saturn's moon Titan.
