Bay of Plenty professional golfers have enjoyed success in the last three PGA of New Zealand Pro-am events.
Te Puke's Jared Pender shot a fine 68 on Sunday at Taupo's Centennial Course to finish one stroke behind co-winners Tae Koh, the defending champion, and rookie professional Mark Hutson in the Harcourts Taupo Pro-am.
Omokoroa-based touring pro Kieran Muir won the Lincoln Farms, EZGO Clarks Beach Pro-am on Saturday with a solid round of 64 which included eight birdies and a single bogey.
Kieran played precision golf and with a bit of luck may have threatened the 60 barrier. He won by two strokes from inform Luke Kwon, Friday's winner at Pukekohe Hayden Beard, Chang Gi Lee and Troy Ropiha on 66.
It was a profitable two days for Mount Maunganui's Hayden Beard as he won the Lincoln Farms Pukekohe Pro-am with a round of seven under par 64 that included seven birdies.
It was Hayden's first win as a professional, which was well received by his peers who know how hard he has worked since turning pro in 2015.
'Nice to see the Bay boys doing well,” says Kieran. 'Hayden has had a few bridesmaids so he is pretty chuffed to get one over the line there.”
Kieran is pleased to be back in the winner's circle himself after an up and down year in 2018 which saw him play more consistently on the Australasian Tour but miss keeping his playing card.
'I played really steady and made 12 out of 14 cuts in Aussie and had more pars on tour than anyone else so you could say it was a really solid year.
'But I didn't keep my card so I had to go back to Q School (qualifying) and got it back. It would suggest that solid golf doesn't get it done. You still have to hit those top performances.
'You can't afford to finish 30th every week and keep it going. I was trying to be more consistent in my performance window by narrowing the ups and downs. I probably did that but there wasn't quite enough of the good stuff.
'But overall it was still a positive year.”
