Seaweed mistaken for oil spill at main beach

Seaweed covered the sea floor at Mount Maunganui beach yesterday.

Mount Maunganui residents were concerned last night after seeing a brown colour in the water near Leisure Island.

What looked like to be a large oil spill, turned out to be long stretches of seaweed along the coast line.

The Bay of Plenty Regional Council reassured residents on their Facebook page that the sea wasn't polluted and that they appreciated the concern.

"Our Pollution Hotline was ringing hot last night with people calling in about what they thought might have been an oil spill near Leisure Island in Mount Maunganui," says the council.

"It certainly looked that way from the sky! Fortunately it was just seaweed, but we really appreciate the calls."
