Tauranga City Council is advising the public to take extra caution around the Mauao base track.

There is a large swell today, which is causing some waves to wash up over parts of the base track.

In a statement from the Tauranga City Council it says if you are using the base track today, please exercise caution, particularly if you have children with you.

'At this stage, the base track is still open to the public. High tide is due to hit around lunchtime today.

'Our parks team is monitoring the situation and signage is in place. We will continue to monitor it until after high tide.”

The council will provide more information if the base track needs to close.
