The Port of Tauranga is continuing to use a magnetometer and sonar to sweep the port channels.
This is undertaken to ensure safe passage for container ships as sunken containers and debris could damage these vessels.
Floating containers are a hazard for ships.
This activity is in response to the splitting of the Rena on the Astrolabe Reef, which has seen some 200-300 containers fall into the sea.
Salvors have reported to the Port of Tauranga that about 40 containers are floating in a contiguous area about 15 nautical miles northwest of the port.
The port is advising arriving and departing ship crews to exercise extreme caution and maintain a vigilant lookout for debris.
The port is fully operational.
