Totara Street in Mount Maunganui is set to be closed this weekend.

From Saturday May 11 at 5am to Monday May 13 at 6am, the road will be closed between Hull Road and Kawaka Street.

On the Tauranga City Council website, it says together with KiwiRail, they are improving the road surface on the Northern rail level crossing on Totara Street.

'At the same time, we're installing train-activated pedestrian gates at both Totara Street level crossings.

'This work will make these crossings safer for all users.

'If you're travelling by vehicle, please allow extra time and follow the detours. Footpath users will be able to cross at all times.

'The gates will be in use later this year once rail signals are completed. Until then, please observe the temporary safety warnings in place.”
