Power cuts and flight delays as wind gusts

Six suburbs across the Tauranga area have been without power on Sunday evening, and flights at Tauranga Airport have been delayed with one diverted and another canceled.

One power outage is due to a car crashing into a power pole on Sunday afternoon, and it has been reported that a tree has come down this evening in Matapihi, with trees in the power lines.

The cause of the power cut in Oropi is from the strong winds. The cause of the other outages is unknown at this stage.

A strong northerly has been blowing since earlier in the evening with wind speeds up to 46 km per hour and gusts up to 67 km per hour.

Tauranga Airport is recording 77km per hour winds. Flight NZ 8262 from Wellington was delayed and had to circle before attempting to land at Tauranga Airport. Flight NZ8502 from Christchurch also had to circle before attempting a landing. Flight NZ NZ5145 to Auckland was cancelled. Auckland to Rotorua Flight NZ8159 was diverted back to Auckland.

Four power outages earlier in the evening grew to six, as suburbs across Tauranga were hit with power cuts

Matapihi has 274 properties without power due to a tree coming down onto power lines. Power went off at 8.56pm and is expected to be restored by 1.56am on Monday May 13.

Tauranga City has 44 properties affected by a power cut. Power went off at 7.43pm and is expected to be restored by 12.43am on Monday May 13.

Omokoroa still has 238 properties without power, after a vehicle struck a power pole on Sunday afternoon on Omokoroa Rd near Beach Grove. Power is expected to be restored by 9pm.

Omanawa has 368 properties without power. Power went off at 7.43pm and is expected to be restored by 12.43am on Monday May 13.

Oropi has 643 properties without power. Power went off in Oropi at 7.54pm and is expected to be restored by 12.54am on Monday May 13.

Paengaroa has the largest number of properties affected with 3550 properties without power since 8.39pm. Power is expected to be restored by 1.39am on Monday May 13.

Flight NZ8262 from Wellington circling over Tauranga as winds gust up to 77 km per hour at Tauranga Airport

The strong northerly is expected to die down towards midnight with a heavy shower of rain expected around 10pm.
