There is plenty for everyone to celebrate Matariki, the Māori New Year, in Tauranga Moana. Here's what's coming up in the seven days ahead:
Exhibitions
All opening on Rāmere 7 Pipiri (Friday 7 June):
- Matariki Hao Tāngata – a retrospective of black and white photography from Kapua Joy Bennett, at the central library. Info
- Ruahine by Michelle Estall – an Incubator Gallery exhibition of artwork based around contemporary Māori Ruahine, inspired by the writing of Te Iwa Makere Tamaki. Info
- Mātātoa – Mumu Returns – an Incubator Gallery exhibition of Taonga Pūoro artist Mumu (Will Moore). Info
- Te Whānau o Matariki – an Incubator Gallery group exhibition by established and emerging artists gathered as a family under the Matariki star. Info
For the tamariki (kids)
- 7 Pipiri: Toi tū te wā workshop for rangatahi – a musical development workshop explaining the kaupapa of Matariki. Info
- 8 Pipiri: Matariki Toi Rāhoroi – a fun and creative craft session on the theme of Matariki. Info
- 8 Pipiri: Tīrama, Tīrama, Matariki – Twinkle, Twinkle, Matariki book launch – join local author/illustrator Rebecca Larsen for a play and book reading, kai and activities. Info
Matariki fun for the whole whānau
- 10 Pipiri ki 14 Pipiri: Matariki ki Mauao hikoi tahi – a hikoi (walk) to the top of Mauao at dawn with traditional navigator Jack Thatcher, to learn about Māori astronomy. Info

- 12 and 13 Pipiri: Cultural Connections (sold out) – a 2-day training course to learn about our region's history, local iwi and hapū, and the cultural richness of our land. Info
