The NZ Transport Agency is advising that SH2 through the Waimana Gorge will remain closed as contractors continue working to clear a significant slip that occurred on Thursday.
This slip is located between Stanley Road and Fraser Road.
Bay of Plenty System Manager Rob Campbell says while there isn't a large amount of material on the road the hill side above is very unstable and is highly likely to fail again.
'This means it is not safe for motorists or for us to put our men and machinery in to clear the road at this time,” says Rob.
'We will look at our options to stabilise the hillside over the next few days and hope to have the road open to public again later this week.
'We ask all motorists to use the alternative route and allow extra time for their journeys.”
The detour is via Whakatane, Ohope and Wainui and is clearly sign posted.
The Transport Agency will continue to provide updates via social media and the NZTA website. A detailed update will be provided on Tuesday.
The NZ Transport Agency thanks road users for their understanding and patience.
