Day one of the NZ Beach Volleyball Open is underway on the Mount Maunganui Main Beach.

Volleyball teams from all over the world are competing in the event with organisers boasting one of the strongest fields in history.

Sport Bay of Plenty – Volleyball CoachForce officer, Tim Cleaver says they have a grandstand which can hold up to 500 people, free to the public.

He says the New Zealand charge will be led by Jason Lochhead, Kirk Pitman, Sam O'Dea and Ben O'Dea, who have spent the tour changing up their partnerships and keeping their combinations under wraps for the NZ Open.

Today will see the main draw competition being with 16 men's and 16 women's teams playing in pool play.

Tim says this will narrow both fields down to eight teams for the quarterfinals first thing on Sunday, with the finals scheduled to start at 1.30pm.
