The New Zealand Transport Agency are advising to plan ahead this weekend if they were planning on travelling through the Waimana Gorge in the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

'The NZTA advises that State Highway 2 through the Waimana Gorge is currently closed,” says the NZTA.

'It is likely to remain closed over the weekend as severe rain is predicted for the Bay of Plenty region.

'This may change depending on how the weather unfolds over the weekend.”

The NZTA asks motorists to plan ahead and check for any changes before travelling by keeping up to date via their social media pages or journey planner online.

The detour will be via Whakatane, Ohope and Wainui and will be clearly sign posted.

The NZ Transport Agency thanks road user for their understanding and patience.
