Bay players eye NZ places

Two Bay of Plenty age group cricket players have a shot at playing in a four nations under-19 cricket tournament in Australia during April 2012.

Joe Carter and Sean Davey have been selected to attend a New Zealand under-19 selection camp being held at Lincoln just outside Christchurch from today until February 23.


The best under-19 players in the country are trialling for 15 places in the New Zealand under-19 team that will play in the four nations series against Australia, India and England.

Participants at the under-19 camp will also be eying berths in the New Zealand team to compete at the ICC Under-19 World Cup to be played in Australia during August.

Both Joe and Sean earned berths in the Bay of Plenty senior representative team last season while still at Tauranga Boys' College.

They joined a select list of Bay players who have made there Bay senior men's team while still at secondary school.

In recent seasons Bay Black Caps Daniel Flynn and Kane Williamson wore the Bay first XI colours while studying at Tauranga Boys' College.

In earlier years John and Brendan Bracewell, along with All Black legend Grant Fox, made their Bay senior debut while attending secondary school.

The two Bay players' journey to the under-19 camp came by way of the Bay of Plenty Cricket age group pathway before representing Northern Districts at last season's national under-18 tournament.

Joe Carter has made his mark in the Bay of Plenty representative team after cementing a permanent place this season.

Over 200 runs with a top score of 55, complement the 286 runs he has smashed in Baywide Premier cricket.

While Sean has spent a period on the sideline with a minor injury this season, he has been getting runs and wickets for Otumoetai Cadets in the Williams Cup in recent weeks.
