Container salvage progress steady

The last of the steel container pieces washed ashore at Bowentown from the Rena wreck at the Astrolabe Reef are being removed today by salvage contractor Braemar Howells.

This debris will be added to other ruined container scrap and cargo debris being collected this week by Braemar, including 70 bags of fish product brought ashore from the wreck, and wood heli-lifted off Matakana Island today.

In total, Maritime New Zealand reports 514 containers have been recovered from Rena by salvors and processed ashore by Braemar Howells.

A further 70 containers have been recovered from land and sea by Braemar Howells teams, making the total ashore now 584.

When the vessel ran aground on the reef on October 5 there were 1368 containers onboard.

Svitzer salvors working onboard the wreck are making steady progress with 15 containers removed from its sunken stern section over the last two days.

Works are being undertaken from the Smit Borneo crane barge, which is positioned off the port side of wreck.

Wire ropes connect the wreck and the barge.
