Heavyweights square off at Blake Park

The big match-up in the Williams Cup in recent seasons has been the games between Platinum Pacific Reclad Mount Maunganui and Element IMF Cadets.

This weekend at Blake Park, hostilities will resume when the two Baywide heavyweights again go head to head in battle.

In the last two years, the two Western Bay of Plenty sides have each lifted aloft in triumph the time honoured Baywide trophy.

Last season Mount Maunganui defeated Cadets in a rain affected semi-final to go on to beat Tauranga Boys' College in the final stanza.

The 2010 final resulted in Cadets chasing down a modest 144 to defeat Mount Maunganui by five wickets.

This season's first match-up in the BOP Cup was a game of two very contrasting innings.

In a day where rain threatened throughout the match, Mount Maunganui made slow work of batting first to reach 157/9 in their allotted overs.

With just 20 overs available under the revised batting formula, Cadets went on the rampage smashing 159 for the loss of four wickets.

Joe Carter went to town to smash 46 from just 26 balls, with Jono Boult (40) and Trent Boult (38no) in similar attacking action, with the game ending in the 17th over.

East Bay United, which is the surprise package of the current Williams Cup, will move further up the points table, if they can defeat Te Puke at the Te Puke Domain.

The key to the Eastern Bays side's victories has been the revitalised batting form of Alex Yates.

Last week Te Puke rediscovered their batting prowess blasting 278 against iTCo Central.

A feature of the Te Puke turn at bat was that several batsmen posted significant totals.

Jeremy Bates and Mitch McCann both blasted half centuries with Steven Crossan reaching the 40s.

Eves Realty Greerton, need to post a comprehensive win over BOP Indians at Pemberton Park, to get their Williams Cup campaign back on track.

After three successive victories, Greerton then came second in their last two encounters, against Tauranga Boys' College and Mount Maunganui.

While the Indian team sit winless at the bottom of the standings, a number of their players are making their mark in the individual batting and bowling statistics.

Tauranga Boys' College, which has a game in hand (against BOP Indians), needs to nail its match-up with Central in Rotorua to remain in contention for a semi-final berth.

Central at home at Smallbone Park are always hard to roll and the encounter could go down to the wire.
