Firefighters are in attendance at a fire involving an excavator and palm kernel inside a large shed in Hull Road in Mount Maunganui.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage, says officer in charge SSO Dave Whislter.

"Crews are working to contain and extinguish the fire using hose lines inside the building.

"While there is some smoke drifting along Totara Street. towards Mount Maunganui, this is not posing any danger to the public.

"In attendance are eight fire appliances and 31 fire fighters.

"There may be some disruption to morning traffic, however, Totara Street. is currently open."
