Bay scores outright win

Bay of Plenty won the toss in the Fergus Hickey Rosebowl two-day game against Poverty Bay on Saturday morning and put the visitors into bat.

On a wicket that looked to give early assistance to the bowling side, the home team ripped through the Poverty Bay batting attack, to remove the visitors for just 117.

Only Daniel Gibbs showed any real resistance top scoring with a gritty 39 runs.

Bay captain Jono Boult continued his outstanding form with the ball taking four wickets with Tony Goodin taking 2/20.

Bay of Plenty opening batsmen Joe Carter was patience personified as he smashed his maiden Fergus Hickey century, finishing with 104 alongside his name.

Fellow opener Peter Drysdale posted 64 with Jono Boult adding 42 to runs, before Bay of Plenty declared at 223/5.

A feature of the Poverty Bay bowling was the three wickets taken by Tauranga Boys' College bowler Tom Clout, who was on loan to Poverty Bay.

Poverty Bay batted again late on day one, and got through to 48 without loss at stumps.

The morning of day two was a repeat of the opening morning's play, with the Bay bowlers again scything through the Poverty Bay batting attack, dismissing their opponents for 139.

Jono Boult wrote his name into Bay of Plenty Cricket history books, with 10 wickets in the match. For the second time this season he grabbed a six wicket bag returning 6/32.

The skipper's latest wicket haul takes his season tally to 30 bowling scalps since the Fergus Hickey competition began in November 2011.

After lunch Bay of Plenty needed just 34 runs for victory and cruised home for the outright win losing just one wicket on the way.

The Bay of Plenty Fergus Hickey season finale will come next weekend when the Bay meets longtime rivals Hamilton at the BOP Cricket Oval at Mount Maunganui.
