GeoNet reclassifies North Island earthquake

GeoNet has reclassified an earthquake which was recorded in the Bay of Plenty on Sunday morning.

The quake hit 50 km north-west of Te Kaha at a depth of 115km at 5.34am.

It was originally reported to be a 5.3 magnitude earthquake, but it has since been reclassified to a 5.9.

More than 5000 people reported feeling the earthquake, with many describing the shaking as weak or light.

GeoNet describes the shaking as "moderate".

It was felt across the North Island, including Wellington and Napier, with reports of it also being felt in the South Island.
