Top teams set for trophy challenge

The symbol of Baywide Reserve Grade cricket superiority will be on the line, when the McNaughton Trophy final is played out at the Bay Of Plenty Cricket Oval at Mount Maunganui this Sunday.

In a replay of last season's McNaughton shootout, defending champions Mount Maunganui will take on 2010 McNaughton titleholders Katikati. Mount Maungnaui made the final stanza by way of defeating Taupo side Tokelau CC with Katikati accounting for Rotorua Central.

Last year's McNaughton final was pretty much a one-way traffic event after Katikati batted first.

Mount bowlers ripped through the Katikati batsmen, with their top score of just 19 runs, telling the tale of a lack of any real partnerships.

Katikati were removed for 83, with Mount stalwart Mark Rolleston grabbing four wickets for just 13 runs. Mount Maunganui cruised to a seven wicket victory with Brad Harding blasting 41 for the winners.

While the Attrill Cup game between Eastern Bay of Plenty and Rotorua was rained out last weekend – the two sides will attempt to square off again at Smallbone Park on Sunday, March 18.

In Gillette Cup news, Trident High School advanced to the next round of the prestigious secondary school competition, when they won a Northern Districts regional field day on Tuesday.

Batting first in the Twenty-20 match, the Bay side posted 111/5 then restricted Cambridge High School to 84/9, to take out the field day final.

Pip Thickpenny made his mark with both bat and ball, earning the top scoring with an unbeaten 32 before going on to take four wickets at a cost of 20 runs.

Trident will now play the winner of the Hamilton T20 field day – with the winner meeting the victor in the Tauranga Boys' College versus Gisborne High School encounter.

McNaughton Trophy final is on March 18 at the BOP Cricket Oval in Mount Maunganui.

The Attrill Cup is on March, 18 at Smallbone Park, Rotorua.
