Repairs to the Mauao Base Track are set to be completed after it successfully remained open for the busy holiday season.

Tauranga City Council staff and contractors worked tirelessly to allow a pre-Christmas opening for the track, allowing pram and wheelchair users to circle the maunga without having to negotiate stairs.

The repaired section will remain open for Auckland Anniversary this weekend, and will close from Tuesday for about a month for the work to be finalised. It will still be possible to walk the Base Track, using stairs that pass the works.

'It's been great to see so many people enjoying the track over summer, and the feedback has been tremendously positive,” says Mayor Tenby Powell.

'We're working closely with iwi to ensure the repairs are finalised in the best way possible.”

The Mauao Trust has guided council staff in their engagement with experts to ensure the maunga is safe and accessible. The Trust represents the three iwi of Tauranga Moana, who collectively own Mauao.

The work will involve landscaping and inserting ‘soil nails' to stabilise banks around the repaired section of track.

The Base Track is being repaired after a major slip in April 2017.
