Baywide rugby competition starts

The first round of the PGG Wrightson Baywide rugby competitions kicks off this Saturday with some intriguing match-ups in the premier competition.

Two 2011 Baywide semi-final replays will see the top four teams from last year's premier competition go head to head action.

Defending Baywide champions Te Puke Sports will travel to Blake Park to square off against Mount Maunganui.

In last year's semi-final Te Puke Sports prevailed by a solitary point, winning 20-19, after trailing by nine points at the half time break.

Five times Baywide champion, Tauranga Sports, will have revenge on their mind when they meet Whakarewarewa at Puarenga Park in Rotorua.

Six tries and 22 points form the boot of Whakarewarewa kicking machine Kelly Haimona, resulted in the Rotorua side reaching the Baywide final, when they defeated top qualifier Tauranga Sports 52-30 at the Tauranga Domain.

Long time Western Bay rivals Rangataua and Te Puna will square off at Rangataua headquarters. Recent encounters between the two sides have been close run affairs with no more than a couple of points separating the two sides. Rotoiti who won the Rotorua Banner last weekend will engage in a local derby with Waikite at Emery Park, with Opotiki hosting premier newcomers Greerton Marist in the Eastern Bay.

Te Teko, who were beaten by Greerton Marist in the Division One title decider last season, will play fellow Eastern Bay side Whakatane Marist.

Both sides are sure to be taking aim at the Division One title for contrasting reasons. Te Teko were narrowly beaten by Greerton Marist in last seasons Division One final, while Whakatane Marist was relegated from the premier ranks at the end of last season.

Other Division One games will see Marist St Michaels host Poroporo in Rotorua, Ruatoki who regained a Div one place when Katikati withdrew will meet Ngongotaha, Paroa will be at home to Rangiuru with Reporoa hosting Kahukura.

Age Group Rugby is alive and well in the Bay of Plenty with thirteen teams kicking off in the Baywide Colts competition. Defending Colts Baywide champions Te Puke Sports will play traditional rivals Mount Maunganui in what could be a close contest.

Rangataua and Te Puna will square off in the curtain raiser at Te Ariki Park with Marist St Michaels at home to former Baywide champions Tauranga Sports. Opotiki meet last years Colts runner-up Greerton Marist in the Eastern Bay, Rototiti and Waikite square-off in the early game at Emery Park with Whakarewarewa facing Kahukura at Whaka headquarters.
