Day one results positive

After day one of competition at the National Secondary School Volleyball Championships, returning champion Tauranga Girls' A has won its pool match.

Tauranga Girls' A looked strong defeating Spotswood College in straight sets at Arena Manawatu, while Westlake Boys' ran into a bit of trouble against Nelson College with a game plagued by errors.

Tauranga Boys' A also left with a convincing win defeating John McGlashan College in straight sets.

They go into the championship as number one seeds in the boys' division one draw.

Event coordinator Stephanie Dench was pleased with the action on the first day.

'The team spirit from all schools involved has been great along with all the supporters who have been cheering their teams on all day.”

Volleyball New Zealand tournament director Pam Brodie is excited about today's action which will see the 32 teams cut to 16.

'This is where the teams need to stay focused so they have a chance to progress into the next round.”

Games are running all week at Arena Manawtu, with finals on Friday afternoon from 3.30pm. Entry is free for all spectators.
