Bark processing plant fire in Whakamarama

Updated 8:30am: A fire investigator is on route to the scene of fire at a bark processing plant in the Western Bay of Plenty.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand northern fire communications shift manager Kaisey Cook says the building fire in Whakamarama has been extinguished and fire crews are leaving the scene now.

'At 7:20am they advised us that the majority of the fire was out and that they had a large area of hotspots they were containing.”

She says the building is 20 metres by 30 metres and there were also bark stock piles on fire.

Earlier: Firefighters are battling a blaze at a bark processing plant in the Western Bay of Plenty this morning.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand northern fire communications shift manager Kaisey Cook says they received reports of a building fire in Whakamarama just after 6am.

"When the crews arrived, the fire was well involved.

"We have four appliances and three water tankers on scene."
