Matakana Island back on track

Defending Seeka KI Western Bay of Plenty senior champions Matakana Island got their title defence campaign back on track in the weekend when they blitzed Papamoa posting 78 unanswered points on Matakana Island.

The home side led by forty five points at the half way break before going on to post an emphatic victory. A feature of the Matakana win was five tries dotted down by Mattie Samuels.

Last season's Combined Cup runner-up Mount Maunganui, was no less dominant than last year's champions, when they defeated Te Puna in a curtain raiser at Blake Park. The 73-17 Mount Maunganui victory, reflected the determination of a side that has championship aspirations firmly on their mind.

Judea defended the Western Bay challenge prize of the Hardy Rosebowl for the second successive weekend, when they repelled a spirited challenge from long time rivals Rangataua, at Maharaia Winiata Park.

The final 39-27 score line to the home side, reflected a game that was up for grabs for most of the contest.

Grenada Park was the scene of triumph for both Arataki contenders. In the main game Arataki Black ran in eight tries on the way to defeating Eastern Districts 50 nil, while Arataki Red waltzed away from Rangiuru 58-12.

Katikati had a good contest with Greerton Marist before prevailing 35-25, with Tauranga Sports enjoying a big 57-7 win against Te Puke Sports.
