Drag racing strip on track

Plans for a $7.5million international standard drag racing strip at the TECT All Terrain Park accelerated this week with a detailed proposal presented to Western Bay District Council.

The feasibility report shows the drag strip development, which could be completed by 2015, will cost $7.5 million to construct, but demonstrates that with the strip's high benefit cost ratio (7.5) the full capital cost will be returned to the community within the first year of operation.

Tauranga drag racer Paul Sattler - the supercharged outlaw class national champion.

The report was commissioned jointly by the New Zealand Drag Racing Association and Te Matai Motorsport Inc, the body that represents seven motorsport groups building facilities at the park's 380ha dedicated motorsport area.

Te Matai Motorsport chairman David Loughlin says the report, produced by Opus, was presented to the council's TECT park sub-committee to keep it informed of the development.

David says the study shows a high benefit cost ratio, returning $7.50 to the community in the first 10 years for every $1 invested – research that backs up the anecdotal belief that many visitors will bring money into the Western Bay from outside the region.

'The money stacks up very well. But we want to stress that we are not asking for council's funds – we do not want one cent from the council, and we will actually be returning to them a portion of revenue on top of land rent.”

The project will be funded from a mix of commercial lending, trust grants and the drag racing association – with hopes that all funding will be confirmed by the end of the year.

Another two full years will be needed to prepare the site, for earthworks and constructing the track and buildings, before the first full year programme of events in 2015.

The strip would offer an international standard track to attract top overseas drivers. It is expected to host 13 race meetings per year, including one international, two national and four regional events, plus other local club events and commercial activities.

New Zealand Drag Racing Association general manager Chris Tynan says the Bay of Plenty's sunny weather is ideal for drag racing because events can only be held when it is dry for safety reasons.

Chris says local racing events at the track could offer boy racers a chance to put their driving skills to the test in a controlled environment and cut down on illegal road racing. He says police in Auckland had noticed a drop off in boy racer problems the nights these events were held at Meremere.

'This is an exciting beginning to what will probably be the park's largest single development.”

Tauranga drag racer Paul Sattler - the supercharged outlaw class national champion - is among many Bay of Plenty motorsport enthusiasts backing the plan.

He says the track will directly benefit the many people involved in both making and racing cars in the region and save them the two and half hour drive to the strip at Meremere.

'It would definitely be a draw card for people from all over especially with some big events.”

Just be cautious about projected figures

In light of NZ's rugby world cup and Hamilton's V8 car races, I treat with caution claims of huge financial returns on such facilities. But provided they honour their statement that they're not seeking Council funds, all the best for this development.

Isn't it interesting

People slowly wake up to the fact that public funds should not be spend on non-core Council responsibility. Good on the racers for not asking for public funds. Although I do not believe that financial forecast will substantiate, I wish the racers the best for their enterprise. Still, please lets not forget the indirect costs to the public. Council bureaucracy is used to deal with the application and subsequent support of infrastructure.

Thats the spirit

Just goes to show what an asset the T.E.C.T arena is going to be, its a fun park and brilliant, to see someone else able (well I hope)utilise the area, its easy to get to, and the sandle wearers with noise meters, dont get a say!!!!, well unless a complaint gets made about noise stressing out the pine trees.

Activities are mostly 'stand alone'

The Residents of Tauranga City Council and Western Bay of Plenty Council, with huge support from TECT and City Partners and others, have provided the basic infrastructure and land. The many and various 'user groups' are responsible for their own individual costs associated with the development and operational costs applicable to their chosen sport. The only sustainable way forward and needs to be applied to all sporting and recreational codes. A base level of support with codes meeting their own specific costs for capital and operational expenditure. If your choice of sport has higher capex and opex, be prepared to pay for it!

You are confused, TECT arena is different to TECT ALL TERRAIN PARK. Also so as the record is straight, Mayor Crosby stated over and over that Baypark would not cost either but just recently $5 million has been thrown at it to cover the huge losses to date, then there is the $12 million in debt at the start to that is not even in the losses yet. Lets hope the racer lads are a bit more of "Kiwi can do" I am sure TECT will step in with some help there to, will all be good to see.

What ever, so I got my Tects messed up, I think most would know what I was on about, as most know Bay Park is a dog, and we try not to even think about it, never mind the place name error, try and be positive, and I agree with you, lets get this town moving by making it easier for people to have some fun, at least they have not gone to the Council hands held out, wanting more money, because they cannot run an event properly. Cut the red tape and just do it, within laws of course, I am not a petol head by any means, but love seeing peoiple outside having fun

As long as consistency is applied

Only recently started reading the comments section on this site. Very interesting how many of our councillors spend their time on here touting their unimaginative agenda of "no do" and "no spend", so carrying on a great Tauranga tradition.

interesting

TECT Arena Baypark is an asset to this city, NOT a dog, as "most know", (what a stupid comment) If you were to go for a drive today you would see 1000 plus people "outside having fun" and will be there for the next four days. Come to mention it almost every day children and adults alike have embraced this amazing venue, take the chip off your shoulder and go visit who knows you might even realise you are wrong about Baypark.

Well done again TECT
