‘Mouth-watering’ Easter rugby matchups

Bay rugby fans are spoiled for choice this Easter break with the PGG Wrightson Baywide competitions spread over three days, from today to Saturday, April 7 afternoon.

A mouth-watering match-up will take place at Maramatanga Park in the Western Bay of Plenty, when Te Puna and Rotoiti put their unbeaten records on the line. Both sides have undergone a real renaissance this season posting two emphatic wins apiece, in the start to the Baywide Premier title race.

Bay of Plenty Steamers legend Wayne Ormond is back where it all started for him in a co-coach and playing role for Rotoiti. He has joined long-time Rotoiti player Joe Fenton in taking charge of the Rotoiti troops, with spectacular success in the first two games of the season.

First up the Rotorua lakesiders blitzed long-time rivals Waikite 57-18, while last weekend they ran in nine tries on their way to defeating Rangataua 58-14 in the Western Bay of Plenty.

While Te Puna have retained the nucleus of last season's first fifteen, three quality players have joined the Te Puna ranks during the off season. Plenty of quality experience has been added to the side with the inclusion of New Zealand 7's player Lance MacDonald and former Highlander Daniel Quate. At the other end of the spectrum schoolboy star Te Aihe Toma has also joined the Maramatanga based side.

The Easter break premier games will open when Whakarewarewa host fellow Rotorua club Waikite at Puarenga Park on Good Friday, April 6. While the home side have year to be defeated in the current season, they sit just of the pace courtesy of a first up 22 all draw with Tauranga Sports. Waikite, who are going through a re-building phase, bounced back last weekend edging Opotiki out 31-27.

Tauranga Sports and Mount Maunganui, who are both in the unfamiliar position of near bottom of the point's standings, will go to battle in a Western Bay battle of the bridge, at the Tauranga Domain. Defending Baywide champions Te Puke Sports should be too strong for Greerton Marist at Te Puke Sports headquarters, with Opotiki hosting Rangataua in the Eastern Bay.

Former Baywide heavyweight Ngongotaha, who sit at the top of the Division One standings, should cement their top spot when they visit Reporoa on Friday afternoon. Paroa who are also unbeaten should get the better of Marist St Michaels in Rotorua with Poroporo at home to Whakatane Marist under lights on Thursday night.

The sole Saturday Division One encounter sees Ruatoki host Rangiuru at Tuhoe Park, with Te Teko likely to have a good tussle with Kahukura at Dunderdale Park on Friday.

Joint Colts leaders Greerton Marist will contest a replay of last years Colts title decider when they meet Te Puke Sports. While the defending champions have narrowly lost their first two games against strong opposition, they are sure to give Greerton a real shake. The battle of the bridge curtain raiser at the Tauranga Domain, will match up two former Baywide age group champions, when Tauranga Sports and Mount Maunganui go head to head.

Whakarewarewa kicks off the Colts third round when they meet Ruatoki in the curtain raiser at Puarenga Park on Friday afternoon. Te Puna will be at home to Marist St Michaels, Rangataua travel to play Opotiki at home with Rotoiti taking on Kahukura at Emery Park.
