Multiple fire crews are battling a 200 square metre grass and scrub fire in Whakamarama this afternoon.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand northern communications shift manager Daniel Nicholson says three crews are in attendance.

"The crews are working to extinguish the fire on Wainui South Road."

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE hotline says they can see white smoke from their house in Omokoroa.
