Western Bay Surfcasting Club does it again

Following recent successes by Western Bay Surfcasting Club members at the Kahawai World Cup – another club member has won the Otamarakau School Fishing Competition.

Matt and his wife both entered the competition, but at the last minute Urshula had to work so Matt thought he should do the right thing and not fish either.

Matt and his winning snapper.

At about 6.30am he was at home staring at the ceiling and thinking of all the snapper waiting to be caught, when he received a text message from his wife urging him to go down to Otamarakau and try his luck.

Reluctantly (Yeah - Right!) Matt headed off to the competition and located a fellow Club member Vijay Raj, and began fishing near him at 9.00am.

Conditions were not to his liking and by 2.20pm with no fish, he had had enough, but decided to have one last cast before the competition ended at 3pm.

He had placed his rod in its holder and was about to have a rest on the sand when Vijay yelled out "Matt! your rod". The rod was bent over with an obvious good sized fish tugging on his line.

Out of 300 anglers in the competition Matt's fish caught at the last minute won the competition and he went home with a cheque for $4,000 - a very happy man.
