School cricket season ends

The first term school holidays have brought to a conclusion the preliminary Bay of Plenty rounds of the NZ Cricket annual schools competitions.

Unlike rugby where school competitions are completed during the season - NZ Cricket annual schools tournaments are played in term one and four of the school year.

The prestigious Gillette Cup, where Tauranga Boys College have reached the National Finals on four occasions in the last decade, will feature two Bay representatives in the second half of the tournament.

Trident High School won through a second ND T20 regional field day played in late March, and will progress to the next stage in term four, where they will play the winner of the Hamilton, Counties Manukau and Northland field day.

The ND field day victor will face a big challenge, as they will meet either Tauranga Boys College or Gisborne Boys High School in a fifty over match, The Tauranga Boys verses Gisborne Boys match-up was scheduled for term one, but was postponed due to inclement weather and the closure of the Waioeka Gorge.

Aquinas College, have won through to the ND Final of the NZCT Secondary Schoolgirls competition in the last week of October, from where the winner will book a berth in the National finals.

The Intermediate Schools New Zealand Cup and Shield playoffs, will have plenty of Bay of Plenty interest. Defending New Zealand (Boys) Cup champions Tauranga Intermediate, will meet Aquinas College in the Bay of Plenty/Waikato Valley leg of the tournament, in term four. Originally scheduled for the term one, inclement weather in March pushed the local final out to October.

Tauranga Intermediate will also be represented in the New Zealand (Girls) Shield, with the Western Bay School reaching the ND finals in the last week of October.
