Rotorua derby to take centre stage

One of the most anticipated match-ups in the PGG Wrightson Baywide Premier title race, will take place at Puarenga Park today when Whakarewarewa are at home to long-time rivals Rotoiti.

Rotoiti has made an outstanding start to the current season, and will take an unblemished record into the contest with Whaka.

Three bonus points (four tries or more) from four games testify to a team that likes to make repeated raids on the opposition try line.

While regular goal kicker Whakataki Cunningham is amongst the leading points scorers, Rotoiti have a more than able replacement in former Waikite player Quade Langeveldt who converted two of his teams touchdowns last weekend.

Revenge will be on the mind of Whakarewarewa, who have dominated the contests with their Rotorua neighbours in recent seasons.

However, Rotoiti laid down the gauntlet to their archrivals when they defeated Whaka 25-12 in the pre-season Rotorua banner competition in mid-March.

Two new season Whakarewarewa recruits, who have both put their names on the season points tally are Tyson Ripia and Maurice Stone. Both are adept kickers and have shared the teams kicking duties in the opening matches of the season.

A mid table clash should draw a large Eastern Bay crowd to Opotiki when the home side meets Te Puna. Both sides will want to take points from the game, with the victor cementing a place in the top four.

The Opotiki pack with Dean Elmiger leading the engine room, are likely to try to control the game - while the pacy Te Puna back line can run in tries from well in their own half. Former New Zealand Sevens star Lance MacDonald touched down his first try for Te Puna last weekend.

Joint competition leaders Te Puke Sports, went on a try scoring blitzkrieg against Waikite last weekend running in 13 touchdowns, and should have little trouble with cellar dwellers Rangataua at Murray Salt Stadium.

Greerton Marist could give Tauranga Sports a good tussle at the Tauranga Domain, with Mount Maunganui looking for their second win of the season when Waikite pay a visit to Blake Park.

When the Division One title race started, few would have picked Eastern Bay side Paroa to lead the standings with an unbeaten record.

Paroa have knuckled down to become genuine title contenders and have been playing winning rugby - however their biggest test so far will be provided when Whakatane Marist take on the competition leaders. The Eastern Bay Marist side who were relegated from the premier ranks, have a return to the top echelon on their agenda, and should provide Paroa with a real challenge.

Ngongotaha and Te Teko who occupy second and third place on the points tally, could have a close battle at Dunderdale Park. Rangiuru should be too good for Marist St Michaels, Poroporo will be looking to return home from Rotorua with some points from their clash with Kahukura, with Reporoa hosting Ruatoki

Defending Colts champions Te Puke Sports, will be seeking their first win of the season when Rangataua visit Te Puke's home ground, in the curtain raiser to their premier sides. Mount Maunganui remains the only age group contender with an undefeated record, after they won a battle of attrition with Greerton Marist last week. However Ruatoki who sit just off the pace could give the home side a spirited challenge in the early game at Blake Park.

Greerton Marist, will be heavily favoured to win the battle of the Marist teams, when they face off against Marist St Michaels.

The encounter between Opotiki and Te Puna could go down to the wire, Tauranga Sports should defeat Rotoiti, with Kahukura at home against Waikite.
