Te Puke on a winning streak

Te Puke Sports continued their steamroller approach to the PGG Wrightson Baywide premier title race, when they ran over Rangataua 90-16, at Te Puke headquarters at Murray Salt Stadium on Saturday, April 21.

Over 300 points in their first five games, testifies to the Te Puke teams desire to win back to back Baywide titles after breaking their Baywide drought last season.

After leading 47-9 at the break, Te Puke continue their assault on the try line in the second spell running in 14 touch downs in their emphatic victory. Nathan Harris led the way with three tries with Rameka Poihipi, Sipa Moi Moi, Gideon Uelese and Nick McCashin grabbing two tries apiece.

McCashin kicked ten conversions, which took his season tally to over 120 points in just five games. The Rangataua points came from a try awarded to Marshall McLeod and 3 penalties and the conversion slotted by Daiyu Isimori.

Whakarewarewa secured revenge over Rotorua archrivals Rotoiti, when they reversed a pre-season defeat to post a 29-10 victory, and regain the Tai Mitchell Shield. Trent Sweeney touched down the first two Whaka tries - with Liam Coleman scoring the try of the match after a break out on half way, with Coleman running 20 metres to finish with a swan like dive on the line. Corey Marsters scored the sole Rotoiti touchdown

Whaka, who also have an unbeaten start to the season albeit with a draw in the first game, sit just three points adrift of Te Puke Sports. While Rotoiti tasted defeat for the first time, they sit in third place just two behind their archrivals.

A real cliffhanger took place in the Eastern Bay of Plenty, where Opotiki held on by a solitary point to grab a 26-25 victory. The home side drew out to a handy lead in the second spell, before Te Puna stormed back late in the game to go down by a single point.

Tauranga Sports were too good for Greerton Marist winning 49-3, with team management praising the performance of centre Jeremy Cave, who scored three tries. Mount Maunganui ran in eight tries in defeating Waikite 64-14 with Zane Butler grabbing a hat trick. Mount kicker Matt Golding was in good form with a try, six conversions and four penalty goals

Paeroa maintained their lead (and unbeaten record) in Division One, when they proved too strong for Eastern Bay neighbours Whakatane Marist, posting a 30-7 victory. Their latest victory leaves the competition leaders five points clear at the top of the table. There were a few eyebrows raised at the margin of Te Teko's win over Ngongotaha at Dunderdale Park. The final 49-11 scoreline told the tale of the Eastern Bays side's superiority in the encounter.

Rangiuru continued their good start to the season, posting a fourth successive victory when they beat Marist St Michaels in a close contest, taking out the game 32-25. Reporoa grabbed their first win of the season defeating Ruatoki 13-8 with Kahukura edging out Poroporo 19-10.

Mount Maunganui Colts continued their place at the top of the age group standings, with a strong performance in the curtain raiser at Blake Park, defeating Ruatoki 42-3. A strong start to the season makes Mount Maunganui the team to beat in the age group title race.

Defending champions Te Puke Sports posted their first win of the season getting past Rangataua 35-14. Te Puna, who are looking like genuine title contenders, marched past Opotiki 40 nil in the Eastern Bay, with former age group title holders Tauranga Sports too strong for Rotoiti winning 66-10.

Greerton Marist won the Marist derby getting past Marist St Michaels 18-12 in the Sulphur City, while Waikite continued their climb up the points ladder with a comprehensive victory against Kahukura posting a 68-5 win.
