Workers and shoppers will no longer be able to park for free in the Tauranga City Centre from tomorrow.
This announcement follows New Zealand's shift to Alert Level 1 on Tuesday, June 9.
Parking fees were suspended by Tauranga City Council when the country moved to alert level 4 on March 26.
A statement posted to the Council's Facebook page says they have had a range of free and reduced fees through the COVID-19 alert levels.
'From Thursday, all on-street and off-street parking will return to their standard fees.”
The statement says time restrictions were unchanged and will continue to apply as normal.

So now everyone is back we can pay to go and look through our bustling CBD. Thank you for the free parking during lockdown.
Good business recovery plan ?

Not. Downtown struggling so let's charge people to come. Suppose there will be even more parking for those that work there and have no choice to pay. But shopping customers maybe the malls are more attractive than ever ?
Why Not

Make the bonehead who cost us a needed parking building and $19million subsidise CBD parking until a workable alternative is found? Yeah right, why not hand the next Lotto First Division prize to me? Ha ha Jokes aside though, I realise revenue is needed but with businesses struggling to get back on their feet this is hardly a way to being needed customers through the doors. Now is it?

Great plan TCC because downtown was SO busy even before the lockdown.

As if the CBD retailers aren’t struggling enough.... Another bright reason NOT to go the the CBD to shop. On the up side, the council could convert all the empty shops into mini car park stations.
I didn't know...

... it was free. I wonder how many others are in the same boat. I go there so infrequently. What has happened to the heart of our city is just a disgrace. I remember as a teenager how I looked forward to going shopping "in town" every Friday night, and sometimes a movie or meet friends for dinner. It was a fun, vibrant place. But successive Councils have just killed it. It's true that people prefer not to shop while major re-construction is going on, but it could be phased to consider that. Mommatum is absolutely right; the people responsible for the Harrington St. fiasco should be made to pick up all parking in the CBD until the debt is paid off. TCC should also consider making commercial rentals more affordable, and maybe a trial scheme for some of the empty shops.
